‘Tales of Symphonia Remastered’ announced for Nintendo Switch

“Tales of Symphonia Remastered” is a phrase that has a lot of you excited on social media right now. Ever since the game was revealed during the Nintendo Direct that was streamed yesterday, many fans were replying to Nintendo of America’s official tweet and were nearly in tears with nostalgia.

The beloved Gamecube JRPG is back, and it’s portable! It’s also one of the best games in the Tales series, pretty much no matter who you ask. Coming to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the “remaster” is based on the PlayStation 3 version and not the original Gamecube one, which has some gamers kind of miffed.

In a dying world, legend has it that a Chosen One will one day rise from amongst the people and the land will be reborn. The line between good and evil blurs in this epic adventure where the fate of two interlocked worlds hangs in the balance. But is it truly “remastered”?

Calling it a “remaster” would indicate that it has improved visuals like textures and assets, but so far, neither Nintendo nor Bandai have shared what earns it this label. To be fair, the PS3 copy did come with higher resolution graphics, but it ditched the cell-shaded outlines on the characters, which was one of my favorite things about the original.

Not only that, but it’s locked at 30 FPS, and while I’m not one to really care about 60FPS gaming for JRPGs, I can see why there are people who prefer it, especially after playing it this way on PC for just $10.

Bandai Namco have also shown off a special edition of the game that can be pre-ordered right now. It features the base game, a metal case, stickers and art prints and runs $49.99 USD regardless of which system you collect it for.

You may want to be careful in watching the trailer above as it contains a few potential spoilers for anyone who never played the original, though if you fit into that category, you may not even realize they’re spoilers, so proceed at your own risk!
