Retroid Pocket 3+ Metallic Edition

GoRetroid has just announced the latest iteration of their popular devices – the Retroid Pocket 3+ Metallic Edition. As someone who owns the Retroid Pocket 3 and didn’t upgrade to the plus version, the metallic edition is going to be my next purchase. I tend to skip every other upgrade for budget reasons, so I’m stoked to feel the cool, metal body of the best-shaped device I’ve ever seen from this company!

What the heck are Hall Effect analogue sticks anyway?

According to GoRetroid, the new device will feature a metal shell and hall effect analogue sticks. For those unfamiliar with the term, Hall Effect analogue sticks are a type of joystick that utilizes a magnetic field to detect the position of the stick. The addition of the metal shell gives the device a sleek, modern look that sets it apart from previous versions. The hall effect analogue sticks also offer several advantages over traditional analogue sticks, including greater precision and sensitivity, as well as a longer lifespan (less susceptible to drift!).

In addition to the new device, GoRetroid has also recently announced the Retroid Pocket Flip, a device that closely emulates the design and feel of the Nintendo 3DS, and which will also feature the same sticks. The Metal RP3+ is more interesting to me personally as it feels more like a Nintendo Switch Lite but smaller.

What we know about the Retroid Pocket 3+ Metallic Edition so far

The hardware will come with a matte black finish, and it’s possible that other colors will be announced at a later date. The company has a habit of dropping the bombshell of additional colors a while after the initial announcement, so we’ll have to wait and see. While no pricing or release date information has been provided yet, it’s likely to be “coming soon” as seen at the end of the video below. As someone who owns previous iterations, I know that they tend to sell out quickly and struggle to keep up with demand, so pre-orders will likely go fast.

If you’re a retro gaming enthusiast looking for a high-quality, stylish device to play your favorite games on (and are into emulation and the work that goes into making it happen, of course), the RP3+ Metallic Edition is going to be an eye-catcher. Let me know in the comments what you think based on the showcase below!
