Rare announces GoldenEye 007 4K remaster for Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch

To everyone’s surprise, GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 just got some love from Rare Ltd. Twenty five years post release, it’s finally getting a 4k remaster complete with smoother framerate, achievements, and even split-screen multiplayer! Announced on its Twitter account, there was no mention of a specific release date to accompany it.

Released all the way back in 1997, I still remember playing this with my friends and brother and spending hours sneaking around taking out bad guys with a pistol. Now, if you pay for Game Pass, you’ll be able to do just that, but in 16:9 and 4K Ultra HD (where supported).

Unfortunately, if you’re playing Microsoft’s subscription service on a PC, you’re out of luck. GoldenEye 007 is coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One via its Rare Replay collection, which includes 30 classic Rare titles.

The company is also dropping the stealth shooter on Nintendo Switch Online for those with the higher tier subscription, which bundles in “Expansion Pass” features like – you guessed it – Nintendo 64 titles.

The only downer part about this awesome announcement is that the Xbox remaster of GoldenEye 007 that’s a part of Game Pass will not feature online multiplayer – just the aforementioned split screen. Instead, that will be reserved for the Switch edition. Needless to say, this has everyone up in arms, and it was a strange decision, to say the least.

My hope is that this changes in the future, but I’m not keeping my hopes up. Instead, I’ll place all of my energy toward hoping that Xbox works more with Nintendo in the future. As it tries to place Game Pass literally everywhere for gamers to enjoy, this may not seem so far fetched after all.
